Famous Songs About Dogs
Famous Songs About Dogs

Ever since Patti Page sang "How much is that Doggie in the Window," songs about dogs have remained popular. After all, dogs are man's best friend; it would only make sense that we would immortalize them in song. Let's have some fun and look at some of the famous "dog songs" and some of the lyrics that endear dogs to us.

Famous Love

The Fauves, a band from Australia tell us that, "Dogs Are The Best People" in their song by that title on their album Flashlight. Way back in 1965, Davy Jones of The Monkees recorded the song, "Gonna Buy Me a Dog," where he claims that he's gonna buy him a dog because he needed a friend now. Then there was Lobo with the hit "Me and You and a Dog Named Boo."

Famous Songs About Dogs

It's just ironic that the musician Cat Stevens would write a song called, "I Love My Dog." But the lyrics are true-to-life as they say:

"I love my dog as much as I love you

But you may fade, my dog will always come through.

All he asks from me is the food to give him strength

All he ever needs is love and that he knows he'll get"

Who can forget Snoopy's Christmas a/k/a Snoopy vs. The Red Baron? And how many middle-aged people can still sing the Scooby Doo Theme Song? What about "There was a farmer had a dog and Bingo was his name-o!" and "Oh Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?"

If you're into country music, you might know "You Gotta Quit Kickin' My Dog Around."

The Byrds had a hit with "Old Blue," with the lyrics:

"My old Blue he was a good old hound

You'd hear him hollering miles around

When I get to Heaven first thing I'll do

I'll grab my horn and call for Blue"

Elvis had a tune called "Old Shep" that told us:

"When I was a lad

And Old Shep was a pup

Over hills and meadows we'd stray

Just a boy and his dog

We were both full of fun

We grew up together that way"

The lyrics to the Pet Shop Boys song, "I Want A Dog" say:

"I want a dog,

To walk in the park

When it gets dark, my dog will bark

At any passers-by

Oh, (oh oh) you can get lonely

I want a dog"

Blake Shelton sang "Ol' Red" with the lyrics:

"Now Ol' Red he's the damnedest dog that I've ever seen

Got a nose that can smell a two day trail

He's a four legged tracking machine

You can consider yourself mighty lucky

To get past the gators and the quicksand beds

But all these years that I've been here

Ain't nobody got past Red"

Brother and sister team The Fiery Furnaces, tell us in their song, "My Dog was Lost But Now He's Found,":

"I kicked my dog

I was mean to him before

I guess that's why he walked out my door

I really wish I could see him some more

I looked under the mats and I asked all the cats

I went to the vet have you heard anything yet

My dog was lost but now he's found

My dog was lost but now he's found"

And then again, some songs that we think are about dogs aren't really about dogs at all, such as Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog," Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog," George Clinton's "Atomic Dog," and the popular song a couple of years ago by The Baha Men, "Who Let The Dogs Out." For instance, "Golden Retriever" by Super Furry Animals is really about a gold-digging woman, as is "Hair of the Dog" by Nazareth.

There will continue to be songs about dogs because we love them so much. There will be silly kid songs, funny country songs, and serious love songs - all about dogs.

5 Famous Prayers in the Bible
5 Famous Prayers in the Bible

You may wonder what type of prayer arouses GOD'S attention and get results. Effective prayer is direct communication with GOD. It acknowledges individual faith in a power higher than oneself who can help, guide and bring comfort. Many see prayer as weak, spineless and the last resort of out of touch people in over their heads. I beg to differ. Prayer is the very first tactic of powerful, resourceful people living in complete dependence on GOD.

Famous Love

Throughout the Bible when situations occurred, prayer made the difference for the person praying. The first example of prayer that gets GOD attention is The LORD'S Prayer. Often called the Model Prayer, this prayer uses the formula of reverence for GOD first, petitioning, asking for forgiveness and then closing with praise. When asked by HIS disciples, JESUS taught HIS followers to pray with sincerity and without pretext. The tone that this prayer sets is reliance upon the LORD to meet needs.

5 Famous Prayers in the Bible

1. Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. (Matthew 6:9-13, NKJV)

The second prayer example looks at the short and simplistic Prayer of Jabez. It also got GOD'S attention and produced results! What was noteworthy of this prayer was the fact that Jabez asked for GOD'S blessing. The Bible gives very little background about Jabez, yet this particular prayer stuck out.

2. And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, "Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that YOU would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!" So God granted him what he requested. (1 Chronicles 4:10 NKJV)

The third prayer we examine is what David prayed after Nathan the prophet informed him of GOD'S judgment because of his adultery with Bathsheba, and his murder of Uriah, Bathsheba's husband. This is a prayer of confession to assuage guilt and receive forgiveness. The person praying must always take full responsibility for his or her actions. This type of humility makes this an effective prayer.

3. O loving and kind GOD, have mercy. Have pity upon me and take away the awful stain of my transgressions. Oh, wash me, cleanse me from this guilt. Let me be pure again. For I admit my shameful deed-it haunts me day and night. It is against YOU and YOU alone I sinned and did this terrible thing. YOU saw it all, and Your sentence against me is just. Create in me a new, clean heart, O GOD, filled with clean thoughts and right desires. Don't toss me aside, banished forever from Your presence. Don't take Your HOLY SPIRIT from me. Restore to me again the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey YOU. (Psalms51:1-17 TLB)

A fourth example is how Hannah, who was barren, prayed for a son. She knew that GOD was able to grant her request. Her prayer demonstrated her faith by including a vow for her future.

4. In bitterness of soul Hannah wept much and prayed to the LORD. And she made a vow, saying, "O LORD Almighty, if YOU will only look upon your servant's misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head." (1 Sam 1:10-11, NIV)

The fifth prayer examined is from Hezekiah after the prophet told him to prepare to die. Hezekiah's tearful prayer spoke of his urgent need. GOD bestowed mercy and gave Hezekiah fifteen additional years of life.

5. "Remember now, O LORD, I beseech YOU, how I have walked before YOU in truth and with a whole heart and have done what is good in Your sight." And Hezekiah wept bitterly. (2 Kings 20:3, NASU)

The common thread prevalent in these prayers was a sincere link to GOD. True prayer fellowship recognizes that there is nothing too hard for GOD. There is also nothing off limits in the prayer request. Long or short, what garner results from GOD are the faith, love and motivation behind the prayers!

List of Famous Duos
List of Famous Duos

Two, as they say, are better than one. No man is an island, thus, he needs a sparring partner, a romantic mate, an other half, or whatever you may call it. In this list of famous duos, we let you in on the most successful, notable, and unforgettable duos that were introduced either in the entertainment field, at the blueprint of a timeless story, at the dining table, and just about wherever!

Famous Love

Romeo and Juliet - Theirs is a case of everlasting love. Although their feuding families (the Capulets and the Montagues) would not allow it, Romeo and Juliet decided to have a go on their destiny together. No love is lost as the romantic duo was beside each other in death. They took their own lives in a case of double suicide that was mainly brought about by misinformation.

List of Famous Duos

Batman and Robin - This fantastic duo made it to the top by mesmerizing comics fans everywhere. Their popularity zoomed out of comic pages and into the boob tube. Right after Batman and Robin secured leading roles in their own television show, they were launched onto the big screen in several unforgettable films. Certainly, it cannot be possible with just Batman or Robin. That's why they are in this list of famous duos.

Bread and butter - In terms of food, there can never be better than anything else than bread and butter. This simple yet famous pair can be seen beside each other in every dining table anywhere in the world.

Adam and Eve - In the beginning, God decided wittily to make a pair instead of just a man or a woman. These two did not disappoint. They fulfilled their mission as the first man and woman. We definitely owe it to Adam and Eve's genetic contribution to our society, no matter which society you belong.

Barbie and Ken - Before Dora had Boots and even before Mickey Mouse had Donald Duck, Barbie had Ken. The world-famous dolls have been wowing fans everywhere for so many decades. They were made into many different versions, to the delight of toy collectors.

Bonnie and Clyde - One of the most successful pairs in history and definitely deserving of a spot in this list of famous duos, is Bonnie and Clyde. The duo of robbers made an excruciating difference in the criminal universe, choosing to rob small stores and gas stations rather than big commercial banks, which can rake in millions for them in an instant. Incidentally, aside from being renowned outlaws, Bonnie and Clyde also happened to be lovers.

Beavis and Butthead - That one special thing that the era of music television brought to mankind is the duo of Beavis and Butthead. That is reason enough for them to belong in this list of famous duos.

Love in Africa: A Collection of African Love Quotes
Love in Africa: A Collection of African Love Quotes

Many women including myself like to claim that the male segment of our population knows nothing about love and romance. African men in particular get a lot of criticism for been un-romantic and incapable of expressing their emotions. From personal experience I would say that this is not true, some of the most romantic men I have dated are African. However, what is romance really? I like to define it as the expression of love. In this article I define romance through the use of some of my favorite African love quotes. These African quotes give us a glimpse into African culture and views on life. So in defense of my romantic African brothers here are some African love sayings, enjoy them and for all the men out there feel free to use them this Valentines Day to show your beloved just how much you care.

Famous British Authors - Ten Best-Loved
Famous British Authors - Ten Best-Loved

Which famous British authors made it to The Big Read? A survey conducted in 2003 by the BBC to reveal the UK's best-loved book? What novels are they famous for? And which of their books were in the Top 200 list?

Famous Love

There are a few things to consider, though, if you want to enjoy reading the novels written by the best-loved, famous British authors. First, determine where your interests lie. You may be interested in contemporary novelists, or perhaps you are more intrigued by classic writers? Works of English literature originating prior to World War II is considered by most to be classical in nature, whereas novels written during or after that war could be called contemporary fiction. An example of a classic writer would be Chaucer and Ernest Hemingway is a contemporary.

Famous British Authors - Ten Best-Loved

Another consideration might be which genres interest you most. Loosely defined these fall into ten categories: action-adventure, crime, detective, fantasy, horror, mystery, romance, science fiction, thriller or western. Depending on what you find entertaining and that which grabs your attention, this can be an important factor when contemplating reading novels by an author you are as yet unfamiliar with.

You also need to understand the universal themes associated with the writing of fictional work; they include Imagination, Identity, Conflict, Love, Humour, Belonging, Time, Faith and Place. Be aware that many novels revolve around one or more of these themes and that several themes can be the focus of just one book. One author should not be thought of as the quintessential romanticist, humourist, or even imaginative writer as each author often considers a combination of themes and complex ideas when creating a novel so consider exploring these concepts before deciding to 'pigeon-hole' specific writers with a particular theme or genre.

Here are ten randomly selected authors from the books nominated in The Big Read.

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien - The winner was indubitably Lord of the Rings by this fantasy writer. Tolkien's The Hobbit also made the Top 100. Other works of Tolkien include The Silmarillion.
Terry Pratchett - Britain's comic fantasy author had fourteen of his titles in that list: Mort, Good Omens, Guards! Guards! Night Watch, The Colour of Magic, Small Gods, Reaper Man, Wyrd Sisters, Hogfather, Men At Arms, Thief of Time, The Fifth Elephant, The Truth and Witches Abroad.
Joanne K. Rowling - A fantasy writer of Harry Potter fame was another novelist with four titles making the grade: Harry Potter And The Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone, Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets and Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban.
Jacqueline Wilson - Another novelist not to be ignored, a writer of children's books; also with fourteen titles of distinction: The Story of Tracy Beaker, Double Act, Vicky Angel, Girls In Love, The Illustrated Mum, The Dare Game, Bad Girls, Lola Rose, Girls In Tears, Sleepovers, Secrets, Girls Out Late, Dustbin Baby and The Suitcase Kid. Wilson's novels are typically realistic stories about modern British children facing problems in their daily lives. In 2005 this writer was announced as the Children's Laureate.
Charlotte Bront - Three of the five Bront sisters became romance writers. Charlotte's Jane Eyre made the Top 21.
Emily Bront - Emily's Wuthering Heights also made the Top 21 but alas Anne's Agnes Grey missed the boat! For a family plagued with illness these sisters were remarkably successful.

Charles Dickens - These seven Dickens' masterpieces were given a 'thumbs up!' Great Expectations, David Copperfield, A Christmas Carol, A Tale Of Two Cities, Bleak House, The Pickwick Papers and Oliver Twist. Amongst other works he is remembered also for two of his other major contributions to literature: The Life and Adventures of Nicolas Nickleby and The Old Curiosity Shop. Besides Master Twist the likes of such characters as Ebenezer Scrooge, Fagin, Mrs. Gamp, Charles Darnay, Micawber, Abel Magwitch, Pecksniff, Miss Havisham and Wackford Squeers will doubtless live on forever through his books.
Lewis Carroll - Carroll's Alice's Adventures In Wonderland, made it to the Top 100, inspired by a young girl named Alice Liddell, is among the books recommended. Other works from Carroll include Through The Looking-Glass and Jabberwocky.
Robert Louis Stevenson - With the exception of this Scotsman (and South African born J.R.R. Tolkien), all other novelists mentioned here were English. Stevenson's Treasure Island was naturally considered one the best-loved books written by a British author. His other famous books include Kidnapped, The Body Snatcher and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Jane Austen - Austen's Pride and Prejudice made it to the Top 21. Other significant romantic fiction novels written by Austen include Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park and Emma.

The writers spoken of here are only a few of the best-loved famous British authors but there are many more besides these.
